On March 15, 2020, Music at Westwood will present its third concert of the 2019-2020 season at 5 pm at Westwood Presbyterian Church. Featuring music by John Rutter, the west coast premiere of John Williams’ Gloria and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem.

The Westwood Presbyterian Chancel Choir & Orchestra, soprano Christina Borgioli and bass Matthew Lewis, under the baton of Maestro Dan Redfeld, will perform John Rutter’s For the Beauty of the Earth and Look at the World (with added children’s choir) along with John Williams’ Gloria from the film Monsignor. Written as part of the underscore for the 1982 film starring Christopher Reeve and Geneviève Bujold, the Gloria is a 6 minute tour de force featuring choir, orchestra and pipe organ.

The concert will conclude with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ haunting and powerful Dona Nobis Pacem. Written in 1936 as a plea for peace against the political tension growing in Europe, Vaughan Williams utilizes the poetry of Walt Whitman, passages from the Bible and a speech by John Bright to emphasize the horror and futility of war.
