Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and the west coast premiere of John Williams’ Gloria conducted by Dan Redfeld
March 15, 2020 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
$30.00Music at Westwood will present its third concert – Peace in Our Time – of the 2019-2020 season on March 15, 2020 at 5 pm at Westwood Presbyterian. On the program are works by John Rutter, John Williams and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The Westwood Presbyterian Chancel Choir and Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Dan Redfeld, will perform John Rutter’s For the Beauty of the Earth and Look at the World (with added children’s choir) along with John Williams’ Gloria from the film Monsignor. Written as part of the underscore for the 1982 film starring Christopher Reeve and Geneviève Bujold, the Gloria is a 6 minute tour de force featuring choir, orchestra and pipe organ. This will be the west coast premiere of Mr. Williams’ choral work.
The concert will conclude with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ haunting and powerful Dona Nobis Pacem. Written in 1936 as a plea for peace against the political tension growing in Europe, Vaughan Williams utilizes the poetry of Walt Whitman, passages from the Bible and a speech by John Bright to emphasize the horror and futility of war. This is a large work scored for soprano and bass solo, full choir, organ and orchestra.
Soloists are Christina Borgioli and Matthew Lewis.
